Carbon fiber, also called graphite fiber, contains mainly carbon atoms and consists of thin fibers. These fibers are very strong for their size due to the alignment of the fibers in crystals. Thousand of these fibers are twisted together to create yarns. These carbon fiber yarns can be combined with plastic resin to create a material with a high strength to weight ratio. It can be used to create carbon fiber helmets with lower weights than traditional helmets which are just as durable as traditional helmets.
Modern motorcycle helmets are usually produced from plastics, with many of the high end helmet being reinforced with carbon fiber, Kevlar, or both. For the comfort and protection of the rider they usually have interior filled with foam and fabric.
Since they are designed to absorb the impact of a crash, they will need to be replaced after an accident or any substantial impact to the helmet. This can include dropping the helmet even if there is no visible external damage.
The distinctive look of carbon fiber helmets has become very fashionable. They are constructed using a combination of carbon fibers and Kevlar.
