The New Carbon Fiber Helmet
The modern trend in motorcycle helmets is the use of carbon fibers. These helmets use carbon fibers which have been woven into felt or other cloth. Carbon fiber filaments can also be used in the creation of your helmets protective shell. To create durable helmets which are also light the carbon fibers are often combined with another material such as Kevlar. You will notice that they are significantly lighter than traditional helmets.
Even though these helmets are lighter, they are very strong due to the heating process used to fuse the carbon fibers with acrylic fibers. The strength of carbon fibers equality that of metal, without the weight that metal would create. Another material that is commonly part of them is Kevlar. Kevlar is made by dissolving a polymer in a solvent, and then pulling out fibers and spinning them to create threads. These threads are not very strong on their own, but once they are combined with carbon fibers they are much stronger. They are less bulky and weighty than fiberglass helmets, but much stronger.
Many manufactures still only produce carbon fiber helmets that are part of a custom order. This is changing, however, as the helmets gain in popularity many manufacturers are starting to produce standard helmets from this material. Some of the new ones do offer the safety assurance of DOT certification, although many of the smaller helmets do not have this certification.
Motorcycle helmets continue to evolve as new technology is incorporated into the process of producing them. You will find that they can give you a safe riding experience that is also more comfortable due to their reduced weight and bulk. There are many new choices available these days when it comes to motorcycle helmets. You are sure to be able to find one that fits your sense of style and safety needs.
